Summer Charity Day 2013

Mill Street Barracks

The Barracks was built in 1861 and is steeped in military and local history. It has accommodated many branches of the armed forces throughout its life during numerous wars.

In more recent times the “Training Ship” opens its doors to aspiring Sea Cadets and welcomes young people in the Community and gives them the opportunity to make new friends, take part in range of activities like sailing and canoeing and also learn important skills like First aid and Communications. Lot of new and exciting opportunities are provided for 10-18 year olds, providing a head start in life and boosting confidence! 

The team here mucked in to make some much-needed improvements to the Barracks. All hands were on deck as the team decorated and tidied up and also provided support in developing IT services and building a website, to raise awareness of the Barracks and what they do! Bespoke artwork was also created to decorate the Ship!

Nugent Care Charity Shop

Nugent Care Charity Shop is based in Allerton Road, Liverpool

Nugent Care date back to the 1800’s and the pioneering work of John Nugent in relation to child welfare, relief from poverty and social reform.

Today, Nugent work across Liverpool, offering a diverse range of support to adults and children across the region. Nugent offer a tailored approach to Community support, encouraging independence, interdependence and inclusion for some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

The Angel team helped by providing lots of items for the shop to sell to raise money for important Community projects. Maria and Amy helped Jeannette at the Charity shop sorting, pricing, ironing items and selling on the shop floor, meeting people coming in and out throughout the day!

The Foodbank

The Trussell Trust Food- Bank works in partnership with local Churches and organisations across the UK. Some of the team spent the day at the Frontline Centre in Wavertree, one of the Liverpool Food Bank bases.

UK Foodbanks are now the Trussell Trust’s biggest project by far after the scheme was first born in Bulgaria in 1996. The organisation is passionate about being non-judgemental and inclusive in the Community. They believe “everyone has the right to have food on their plate, dignity, skills, a chance to work and hope for the future.”

Local schools, churches and businesses donate non-perishable food to Foodbank locations, “Supermarket collections” being one of the main methods of donation. People are encouraged to donate items from a “foodbank shopping list” for local people in crisis.

We helped by supporting the dedicated Frontline team in meeting with members of the community. The Angel team provided generous food donations, we met with clients coming in to use the Foodbank and chatted to them while they enjoyed some hot food and a cup of tea. Some of the team also helped in bagging food for clients and re-stocking shelves.

The team at the Foodbank are influential in providing for people in crisis and encouraging self-sufficiency by signposting people to relevant agencies to solve longer-term problems.
